About Rushere Hospital
The history of Rushere Hospital
Rushere Community Hospital, located in Kiruhura District in South Western Uganda, about 20 miles south of the Equator, has been providing quality healthcare since 1988. The hospital began as an immunization post in response to a measles outbreak in 1987, serving the communities of Kazo and Nyabushozi Counties, currently part of Kiruhura District, Sembabule, and surrounding areas.
By 1989, due to the urgent need for basic health services—the nearest hospital being over 100 km away—the hospital started offering basic medical care, laboratory services, and maternity care from hired premises. Increased demand soon required expansion, and in 1990 a hospital development plan was created. A generous donation enabled the acquisition of 62 acres of land, and additional support from civic leaders, government, and friends facilitated the construction of the first hospital building between 1992 and 1993, along with the purchase of essential medical equipment.
Over the years, Rushere Community Hospital has grown into a strong 102-bed facility, featuring an Outpatient Department, HIV Centre, Laboratory, Children’s Ward, General Ward, Private Ward, Operating Theatre, and Maternity Ward. The hospital operates as a Christian interdenominational private not-for-profit (PNFP) NGO, providing care to all people regardless of color, creed, age, or sex.
Owned by the community and governed by a Board of Trustees and a Board of Directors, Rushere Community Hospital is affiliated with the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB), the second-largest faith-based healthcare organization in Uganda. The hospital serves as a referral center for Kiruhura District, which has an estimated population of 361,300 (KDLG Budget Framework 2018/19), and also caters to patients from Sembabule District and parts of Kyenjojo and Kamwenge.
Financially, the hospital is sustained through donations from friends of the hospital and patient user fees and operates under a public-private partnership model with support from implementing partners.
Rushere Community Hospital remains committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality, and inclusive healthcare to all who seek its services.
